At last a break in the clouds and even a hint of spring sunshine this afternoon. I had my first sandwich tern of the year flying north past Balcomie Beach which also cheered me up. A flock of curlews flew over heading north too, really high up and obviously on the move to the breeding grounds somewhere in Shetland or even Iceland. They were talking to each other as they flew – otherwise I wouldn’t have spotted them – a companiable “coor-leeing” which seemed to convey the excitement of the coming spring that we are all feeling.

I picked up an email this evening from a colleague – a hoopoe in Pinkerton this afternoon. Another near miss. I’ll be out first thing tomorrow with my fingers crossed.
